President Trump plans to build an "Arc de trump"

I have recently been hearing news about President Trump's plan to build an Arc de Trump similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. I have seen some videos and photos of the design and as well as heard news about the recent demolition project in the White House for Trump's ballroom, so the claims of a new project felt fitting and truthful. After looking through multiple articles, such as USA Today and Fox News I find that the claim seems very true, and the arc will be a celebration of the United States 250th anniversary. However, according to CBS the project is not completely confirmed and there is no certainty for when it would begin, especially amidst Trump's recent ballroom construction at the white house. There are still many questions about the arc, but MSNBC explains that Trump stated it would be in his honor and that the funding is not yet determined. As of now the project seems to be more of a beginning idea rather than a concrete plan.

A monument reminiscent of France’s “Arc de Triomphe” (nicknamed “Arc De Trump”) has indeed been announced by President Trump, but there is no evidence to suggest that he will actually receive the funding or permission to build it. With that said, Trump recently tore down the East Wing of the White House without permission from the National Capital Planning Commission and is paying for its ballroom replacement via donations from unnamed wealthy donors. So, him moving ahead with the “Arc De Trump” without federal funding or permission from the NCPC is within the realm of possibility.

According to what I've found this claim is true- Trump is planning to build a monument reminiscent of the arc de triomphe to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. The location chosen for this structure is across the bridge from the Lincoln Memorial to serve as a ceremonial entrance to the capitol city. According to BBC, the project will still require congressional approval and will have to be organized by the National Capital Planning Commission in order to actually be completed. This reality means that it will likely be nowhere near construction by the time the 250th anniversary comes around. Critics see this as an extended effort to establish his permanence in office, these dramatic renovations to the White House don't necessarily reflect a willingness to hand over power once his term is complete. Why add a massive ballroom, and an arch paid for by his supporters, if he's not planning on sticking around long term? The Guardian's article discussing this brought to light that the arc de triomphe was built in commemoration of emperor Napoleon's birthday. The fact that an arch will be built using Trump's supporters funds that is reminiscent of a famously tyrannical leader's monument is understandably concerning because of the shared symbolism. Presidents are typically memorialized for their great deeds long after they leave office, the connotation of a president using their influence to establish a permanent monument during their term could be seen as a slightly unorthodox.

Yes, unfortunately this plan is true. Whether it will come to fruition or not is the true story. I found a few different news media. This isn’t surprising because this claim deals with a political figure, Donald Trump. The first news article I found was written by Kathryn Watson with CBS News. This first article explained how the public learned about this idea, and gave us a picture of the model. Trump revealed the model at a White House dinner. CBS did question where the funding is coming from, and mentioned the “slashing of federal jobs during the government shutdown”. The second article that I found was further explaining the why of this project, but went further in depth about some of Trump’s future projects as president. This article was published by BBC, and had very little opinions about the building of the arc. Both of these news articles are similar, but some can have more opinions than others, like we saw in the CBS news article.

The claim that Trump is planning to build an Arc de Trump is true. Trump announced during a dinner for the donors of the ballroom addition that is being built at the White House that he plans to have an arch, similar to the Arc de Triomphe in France, built in Washington (The New York Times). Trump aims to have the arch completed by 2026 in order to commemorate the United States' 250th anniversary. When questioned on where the funds would come from, it was reported on multiple news sites that he may be planning on using leftover funds from the ballroom construction.

In order to truly asses if this claim was true I wanted to uses sources across the political spectrum. I found articles from the more left-leaning New York Times, a more central bias the BBC, and a right leaning source Fox News. In each of these articles I found the facts stated above.

President Trump has plans to build an "Arc de Trump," but those plans haven't yet been cemented or acted upon. According to BBC News, he wants to build this arch across from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, and that it's fully financed already. However, it's a very big project to take on, and would likely take years to create. CBS News states that Trump showed off a model of this arch, but hasn't provided any further detail. From these two articles, it does seem like President Trump intends to build this arch, but it's not clear if these plans will be realised.

This claim is partially true, but a little bit exaggerated. From what I gathered while researching this topic, Trump displayed a model of an "Arc de Trump" project to a group of wealthy people who are to fund a separate affair--his White House ballroom project. He presented renderings and three different sized models, according to an article by Aishvarya Kavi from the New York Times--a very credible news source. According to Kavi, construction plans for new memorials must be authorized by Congress and then undergo an extensive planning and reviewing process. Some of the federal agencies involved in this process include the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts, which are currently shutdown along with the rest of the government. Therefore I don't see this project being executed anytime soon. I also found a CBS article supporting the fact that Trump was showing off the model, but it did not provide evidence that he and/or his administration is responsible for the building and funding for the structure. CBS is a credible news outlet with seemingly few biases, although they have in the past been anti-Trump slightly. One of CBS's journalists Ed O'Keefe asked Trump who the arch was for, and in response the president pointed at himself. The project is not officially confirmed, at this point it is simply a proposal.

USA Today published the article and they have good reliability and lean just left of center. They will have an "agenda" against Trump since he is far-right so they will publish articles against his authoritarian antics.

Other major sources like the New York Times, CNN, Time Magazine, & CBS all reported on this plan as well. It is worth mentioning that the name "Arc de Trump" is informal (CBS) and is mainly used by his detractors.

Trump's direct quote on it was: ""It's going to be really beautiful. I think it's going to be fantastic," as he held a model of the arch. "There's a rendering of what it will look like. You have three sizes." He added, "I happen to think the large one," indicating his preference. CBS News' Ed O'Keefe asked the president who the arch is for, and Mr. Trump pointed at himself: "Me."" According to multiple reliable sources, this is a true statement: Trump plans to build an "Arc de Trump." (BBC) . Though it is worth mentioning that there is a very long list of things Trump has planned to do that never came into reality such as arresting Hilary Clinton and building an entire wall between the USA and Mexico. And while the name "Arc de Trump" does not come from Trump or his administration, it is aptly named by his critics since he himself said it was for him.
