American Airlines shares the government's shutdown is "unacceptable", especially when it comes to air travel. Over this past weekend flights were getting canceled left and right and many people weren't able to travel. Not only did flights get canceled but airline employees aren't getting any pay for the work they are doing. Employee shortage led to flight cancellations. They don't want to work if they aren't getting paid. The cause of this is simply because of the government shutdown.

American's mainline and regional operations had nearly 57,000 delay minutes which impacted nearly a million passengers. They doubled down on security, as they don't have as many employees working they need to be extra careful. American Airlines has heard that there are being steps taken when it comes the government shutdown ending.

The claim that "American Airlines operations chief [called] the 1,400 cancellations from the weekend "unacceptable"" is mostly true. First, let's look at the source cited by the claim. CNN, a media source with a left lean bias (Allsides, 2024), stated that the operations chief, David Seymour, told airline employees the governments shutdown was "simply unacceptable". It is important to note that, according to this source, the message was specifically targeted at airline employees rather than the public at large. In relevance to factchecking this claim, this means that it is mostly true. By being targeted at employees specifically, the message becomes less of a political statement and more on an employee newsletter reporting delays and impacts.

A second source corroborating this claim is Business Insider in 2025 where Katherine Li states that "The COO of American Airlines called flight cancellations "unacceptable" in a letter to employees" and "American Airlines is "urging" the government to "reach a deal immediately," according to the letter. These messages and quotations expand the reach of the simple letter to employees that was referenced in the CNN article. This signifies that the message/letter to employees contained at the very least some political intent. As a news source, Business Insider has a bias rating of lean left, according to Allsides in 2024

It is worth noting that I could not find an exact topic match from a news source with a lean right or right bias rating, but very similar topics surrounding the shutdown and flight cancellations are quite easily accessible. Overall, this claim is true.

The claim that “American Airlines operations chief calls 1,400 cancellations from the weekend ‘unacceptable’” is mostly true. In the cited CNN article, David Seymour, American Airlines’ operations chief, is reported to have sent a memo to employees acknowledging the challenges the airline faced due to the recent government shutdown. In the memo, he stated that “everyone deserves better,” referring both to employees who were not being paid and to customers who were experiencing unreliable flights. His comments were directed largely at the prolonged government shutdown (CNN, 2025). Business Insider also reported on Seymour’s memo, emphasizing that American Airlines, amid 1,400 canceled flights, urged the government to reach an agreement to end the shutdown (Business Insider, 2025).

The broader issue underlying Seymour’s memo is well-documented by multiple reliable sources. For example, NPR’s article “Why flight disruptions could linger even after the government shutdown ends” highlights how the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was unable to pay workers during the shutdown. This led to staffing shortages as employees sought other sources of income. NPR also notes that the FAA “ordered airlines to reduce air traffic at 40 of the nation's busiest airports, with cuts still ramping up to 10% of flights by Friday” (Rose, 2025). These systemic disruptions help explain the wave of cancellations and the frustration expressed in Seymour’s memo.

Overall, the claim is accurate and supported by multiple reputable sources beyond the one cited, including CNN, Business Insider, and NPR.

This claim, American Airlines operations chief calls 1,400 cancellations from the weekend "unacceptable", from Business Insider, is true. It states that, “In the letter sent to employees on Monday morning, Chief Operating Officer David Seymour addressed the ongoing government shutdown, now the longest in US history.” Business Insider is a valid source. They are a reputable media organization with professional journalists and editorial standards. They cite primary sources like government reports, corporate filings, and interviews. Academic and media outlets often use them as credible references for business reporting. Another source that confirms this is NBC News. They are saying how, “They are doing everything they can to hold this system together and be out there serving the American public during these trying times. Forty-one days without pay is unacceptable,” Daniels said. “Air traffic controllers should not be the political pawn during a government shutdown.” NBC is also credible because it has dedicated teams for fact-checking, investigative reporting, and political analysis. NBC stories are often based on primary sources such as government data, expert interviews, and official reports.

In investigating the claim that "American Airlines shares government's shutdown is unacceptable" and finishes saying "American Airlines has heard that there are being steps taken when it comes the government shutdown ending". This claim is true

The claim comes from the magazine CNN, which is a worldwide known newspaper known for having the important flashy information quickly. And looking for the quoting that CNN does of the chief of American Airlines is find in several other magazines. Therefore, it is true that the company find the shutdown "unacceptable".

Furthermore, this news was released on November 10, and a few days later CBS news on November 13 released news announcing that the government shutdown is over. Therefore, we can see that the whole argument that CNN made, and that "American Airlines heard that the shutdown would be over" is true.

To finish with, all of these information is back up by the American Airlines website itself. This fact-check is true.
