X's AI chatbot Grok, the AI-search engine Perplexity, and Google's AI summaries all provided false information in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination. A number of false claims were circulated on social media. This was the work of AI chatbots such as Grok, which misidentified the suspect responsible for Charlie Kirk's death before the actual suspect was released.

They also spread false rumors, saying things like Charlie Kirk is still alive or mislabeling information surrounding his death as being false.

Think of this as your investigation log. Answer each question to explain what you discovered and how you got there.

1. Write a brief overall summary of your findings.
2. What primary sources did you find (e.g., transcripts, videos of politician speeches, tweets from public figures, scientific studies)? For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
3. What secondary sources did you find (e.g., newspapers, magazines)? Only use secondary sources if sufficient primary sources are not available. For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
4. What potential biases or interests might each of your sources have?
5. What evidence supports the claim you are fact-checking?
6. What evidence undermines the claim you are fact-checking?
7. What happened when you tried contacting the person or group who made the original claim? (Always try to contact them—it’s okay if you don’t get a reply. For example, if the claim is that the president said something, try reaching out to the administration. If it was a Bluesky user, message that user on Bluesky.)

I found that Grok, an AI chat box on X, has been spreading misinformation when asked about Charlie Kirk and his death. The primary sources I found were articles explaining how AI has been generating misinformation about Charlie Kirk's death, and how other platforms have also contributed to these rumors being spread. Potential biases include someone making false claims that this is misinformation, although they might not have the full story themselves. The evidence that supports my claim is the information I found about the actual story of Charlie Kirk's death, compared to the information that Grok generated on the X platform. Evidence that undermines the claim is that AI is bound to make mistakes and won't ever be perfect, and the creators of AI are constantly reminding social media that AI is improving and it's getting better than it was before. When I tried to contact the person who made the post, I did not get a reply.

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot on September 10 of 2025. His death sparked many AI applications to spread and create false narratives about him. Many experts believe it is because of ai using word probability rather than using factual evidence to come to a conclusion.

I was able to find a government case website that gave good information. The FBI at the crime scene reportedly gave a distinct timeline for the death of Charlie Kirk. Including a weapon in custody and the very weapon used.

https://www.fbi.gov/news/press-releases/utah-valley-shooting-updates

The CBS News article that was given shares many instances where AI had given information that Charlie Kirk was still alive or misleading information about a suspect. Other people use AI to make offensive images that incorporate him.

The government FBI source might have a political bias because the current government leans Republican, and so did Charlie Kirk and his company. The CBS News article could also have a political bias depending on how the news outlet leans. It could also be misleading based on where they got their own information.

The different AI sources that spread this information would be the evidence that supports the claim at hand. There could be some people who used AI correctly to allocate correct information from AI, which would be against the claim.
