This claim seems true but needs some clarification. The government has recently shutdown due to conflict between the republican and democrats in the House debating a Senate passed funding bill. This government shutdown has affected many government workers who are working overtime and without pay, due to the longevity of the shutdown.

Think of this as your investigation log. Answer each question to explain what you discovered and how you got there.

1. Write a brief overall summary of your findings.
2. What primary sources did you find (e.g., transcripts, videos of politician speeches, tweets from public figures, scientific studies)? For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
3. What secondary sources did you find (e.g., newspapers, magazines)? Only use secondary sources if sufficient primary sources are not available. For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
4. What potential biases or interests might each of your sources have?
5. What evidence supports the claim you are fact-checking?
6. What evidence undermines the claim you are fact-checking?
7. What happened when you tried contacting the person or group who made the original claim? (Always try to contact them—it’s okay if you don’t get a reply. For example, if the claim is that the president said something, try reaching out to the administration. If it was a Bluesky user, message that user on Bluesky.)

I found that this statement is true and that the government shutdown in November 2025, which lasted 43 days, was the longest shutdown there has been since the 2018-2019 shutdown, which lasted for 35 days. Primary sources that I found include the article linked in the fact-check, as well as the article "5 longest government shutdowns in U.S. history." Potential biases for this could be people having different political views and blaming it on President Trump being in office during this shutdown. The evidence that supports my claim is the fact that these government shutdowns have all been recorded, and it has been proven that in November 2025, it was the longest shutdown in history. Evidence that might undermine the claim I am fact-checking could be a government shutdown that has taken place in the past, which may not have been recorded. When I tried contacting the person who published this, I did not get a reply.

The statement that the government shut down in Trumps second term has been the longest shut down in US history is true. Articles from BBC, NPR, and MSN all confirm that the 2025 shutdown was the longest in US history. The articles from NPR and Govexec both compare and contrast the 2025 shutdown to others that have occurred in US history, using previous shut downs to prove that this one has been the longest, and that both of Trumps terms have had the two longest shut downs (2018 - 34) (2025 - 43). NADO goes over how this has been the longest shut down in US history and the deal that was struck to solve it, giving funding and backpay to those who suffered during the shutdown. Potential biases that my sources may have are their political beliefs and what politicians fund the news programs as well as personal opinions the writers may have about the government shutdown. Evidence that supports the claim I'm fact checking is US history and all the articles and websites that I have cited showing that the 43 day shut down has been the longest un US history. I could not contact the original poster.

This claim is partly accurate but needs clarification. The article is hosted on MSN, which is not an original reporting outlet but an aggregator that publishes content from other news organizations. This means it is important to verify the claim against primary or well-established reporting rather than relying on MSN alone. Government shutdowns are typically caused by a failure of Congress and the president to agree on funding legislation.

More reliable sources confirm that shutdowns happen when lawmakers cannot pass appropriations bills, often due to political disagreements. Recent data shows that a 2025 shutdown lasted about 43 days and is now considered the longest in U.S. history, meaning that the claim that the current shutdown is the longest depends on timing and may already be outdated.

Tracing the claim back to the original context further shows the effects on workers. During shutdowns, federal employees are either temporarily laid off or required to work as essential employees. This supports the statement that workers may work without pay during a shutdown.

Overall, the claim is generally correct at its core, but it simplifies the process and slightly misrepresents some details. Shutdowns involve the entire federal funding process; the longest shutdown claim depends on timing, and workers are unpaid due to legal constraints during shutdowns rather than specifically because of overtime or how long it lasts.

The article claims that the 2025 government shutdown officially surpassed the 34 days set during Donald Trump's first term in office in 2018-2019. While the content was accessed from MNS, it was originally produced by Time, a premier American news organization known for its rigorous editorial standards. The report primarily utilizes government data rather than speculative research. The piece was written by Chantelle  Lee, a reporter for The Times whose work typically focuses on US Nation news, public health, and reproductive rights. The article claims that the 2025 shutdown was the longest in US history. Evidence is from official congressional records and federal timelines. Crucially, the article cites data from the Congressional Research Service (CRS). As a direct connection to the Library of Congress, the CRS serves as good supporting evidence for the Time article's claim

Corroborating reports from other major news outlets agree and further validate the Times claim. An NPR report confirms that the 2025 shutdown lasted 43 days, significantly surpassing the former 34 day reord holder that was also set under the Trump administration. Additionally, the New York Times published a comparative study of various presidential administrations and their respective government shutdown durations. Their findings align with the statistics by Lee, using identical historical timelines to support the original article's claim. Given the consensus among these different articles and their evidence provided from official government organizations, the claim that the 2025 government shutdown is the longest in US History, as when the articles were originally published, is well-supported and factual.

After further researching this topic, I find this claim to be mostly true. As of the day this user posted this fact-check (November 12, 2025), the government had been shut down for 43 days. This is the longest full government shutdown which I think is an important distinction to make. The full-government shutdown was caused by a stalemate in budget negotiations in Congress. They failed to come to an agreement. The second longest full government shutdown happened under the first Trump administration. The longest government shutdown that has ever happened was a partial government shutdown at the beginning of the year (February to April 2026) which affected DHS and the failure to come to an agreement that would keep it open and operational during the 2026 fiscal year. This shutdown also came at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement reforms because of their use of deadly force on civilians in early 2026. All of the sources I used are unbiased to the best of my knowledge. I tried to use articles written by organizations and non-profits that don't have a particular political bias.
