I found that this statement is true and that the government shutdown in November 2025, which lasted 43 days, was the longest shutdown there has been since the 2018-2019 shutdown, which lasted for 35 days. After further researching this topic, I find this claim to be mostly true. As of the day this user posted this fact-check (November 12, 2025), the government had been shut down for 43 days. This is the longest full government shutdown which I think is an important distinction to make. The full-government shutdown was caused by a stalemate in budget negotiations in Congress. They failed to come to an agreement. The second longest full government shutdown happened under the first Trump administration. The longest government shutdown that has ever happened was a partial government shutdown at the beginning of the year (February to April 2026) which affected DHS and the failure to come to an agreement that would keep it open and operational during the 2026 fiscal year. This shutdown also came at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement reforms because of their use of deadly force on civilians in early 2026. All of the sources I used are unbiased to the best of my knowledge. I tried to use articles written by organizations and non-profits that don't have a particular political bias.
