The Trump administration is planning to allow oil and gas drilling on and around the California coast. Drilling in California waters has not been done in decades. According to many reports the plan of the oil and gas drilling includes six leases during the years 2027 and 2030 in addition to that they plan on expanding drilling in the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico. These changes shows a shift in the U.S. energy plans because drilling off the coast of California has been outlawed since a oil spill in Santa Barbra in 1969. The proposal of the drilling has begun to start conterversy due to high risks to costal communities and tourism. Gov. Gavin Newsom spoke about how he is strongly opposed to the plan and called it "dead on arrival" in Califonia while he was attending a climate change conferance in Brazil. Other climate and enviromental groups have also shown critizism towards the plan such as Surfrider Foundation, they argued that it casues destructive oil spills that would damage the coastline and local economies. Although unclear how much intrest the oil and gas intrusty would have in califonia when compared to the Gulf of Mexico, This situation shows the tenstion between federal energy goals and enviromental goals as well as larger debates over public saftety and economic develpoment.

This claim is true. The Trump administration plans to allow gas and oil drilling off the coast of California for the first time in 4 decades. The plan would include six offshore sales between 2027 and 2030, including expanding drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Drilling has been limited due to the 1969 oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, which led to the start of Earth Day. Newsom has rebuked the idea during the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. Pete Stauffer, an ocean protection manager at a non-profit organization, Surfrider Foundation, stated, “Offshore drilling is highly unpopular across the country and will increase the likelihood of yet another destructive oil spill off our coasts. Surfrider Foundation’s chapter network will fight this proposal vigorously to protect all US coastlines from the unnecessary risks involved with new offshore drilling” (The Guardian). Currently, it is unlikely that these sales will be implemented due to California’s right to veto authority over pipelines that would have to be built onshore. Republicans on the Florida coast have also pushed back on opening oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico because they are worried of oil spills. In conclusion, although the Trump administration is planning on sales for gas and oil drilling, it most likely won’t happen do to vetoes and the worries of oil spills.

This claim is true. The Trump administration has proposed a plan to allow for oil and gas drilling off the coast of California. This plan comes as part of President Trump’s agenda to expand fossil fuel production and move away from the Biden-era push for green energy solutions (The New York Times). Interior Secretary Doug Burgum argued that offshore drilling is necessary to ensure a strong domestic economy and higher rates of employment. The proposal has been met with outcry from lawmakers, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, who expressed that California would “use every tool at our disposal to protect our coastline,” and called the plan “dead on arrival” (AP News and Politico). It is highly likely that the plan will face legal barriers from California if implemented.

The administration is also proposing to allow drilling off the coast of Florida, which has resulted in bipartisan pushback. The Republican governor of Florida, Ron Desantis, as well as several Republican senators have criticized the plan, citing environmental and economic concerns (The Hill).

My evidence comes from highly reputable sources, including The New York Times, AP News, and Politico. It is unlikely that substantial bias exists regarding the reporting of the drilling proposal. Additional evidence of oil and gas drilling off the coast of Florida comes from The Hill, a non-parison political news organization. The original claim comes from The Guardian, which is generally considered a reliable source of information.

The claim that the Trump administration is planning to carry out oil and gas drilling along the state of California is a true statement. According to https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/20/trump-administration-california-florida-oil-drilling-00648189, The Trump administration proposed a plan Thursday that would open federal waters off the California coast to new oil and gas leasing for the first time in four decades and reignite a long-simmering fight with Florida Republicans over drilling along that state’s Gulf Coast.” This would be a five year plan with intense usage of fracking and fossil fuel depletion. However, there is backing against this plan. Gavin Newsom and other california democrats are not standing with this idea, Politico states “For decades, California has stood firm in our opposition to new offshore drilling, and nothing will change that,” Newsom said in a statement. “We will use every tool at our disposal to protect our coastline.”

I think that adding another source would really strengthen this claim because Politico can be biased which decreases the meaning and strength of your evidence.

The claim that the Trump Administration plans to start oil and gas drilling off the coast of California is true. According to the article, for the first time in decades, the Trump administration is planning to allow this process and to start a battle with Governor Gavin Newsom, who is opposes offshore drilling. The article supports this claim because it also states that the administration is planning this, and it has not yet happened. It will be a long process to start, especially because of the consequences for coastal communities and tourism, and the increased likelihood of an oil spill (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/nov/11/trump-administration-drilling-off-california). Sarah Braun, the author of this article, is a freelance journalist who graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Science in the School of Journalism. She has extensive experience writing news hits for articles such as CHRO Daily, Most Powerful Women Daily, and Term Sheet; therefore, she is a fairly reliable source for this information. (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sara-braun-735b2713b/) According to another source, the claim is proven once again. They say that Trump officials want to open the California coast to oil drilling. Although they also state that, according to Gavin Newsom, “It’s never going to happen.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2025/11/10/offshore-drilling-california-gulf-alaska/) So, even though the claim is proven true, it doesn't mean it is actually going to happen. The idea has been put out there, but given the impact on the coastal communities around it, it most likely won't actually be carried out.

The post’s central claim — that the Trump administration is planning to permit oil and gas drilling off California’s coast via new lease sales — is true and documented. The proposed schedule of lease sales matches public reporting, and the plan represents a major shift from decades of minimal federal leasing in Pacific waters. However, it’s still a proposal: whether drilling actually happens will depend on auctions, regulation, and political/legal challenges.

After reviewing federal documents, state statements, and news coverage, I found that the claim is mostly accurate: the Trump administration has proposed reopening offshore oil and gas drilling along the California coast for the first time in decades. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s official Draft 2027–2032 Outer Continental Shelf Leasing Plan lists six possible lease sales in California waters between 2027–2030, along with expanded activity in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Governor Gavin Newsom publicly condemned the plan during a climate conference in Brazil, calling it “dead on arrival,” and environmental groups like Surfrider Foundation also released statements warning that offshore drilling risks catastrophic spills and threatens coastal tourism and local economies. These primary sources confirm that the proposal exists and that its political and environmental backlash is real.

However, the claim overstates the immediacy of the drilling, since the plan is still a draft, not an approved action, and any future drilling would require years of environmental review and public comment. Oil companies also may have limited interest in California compared to the Gulf, which complicates the proposal’s real-world prospects.

1. The Trump administration has developed a five year schedule that include drilling off the coasts of California and Florida. Both states have shown open resistance no matter the dominant political party because they are concerned for the environmental impact and oil spills. California specifically hasn’t been federally opened in decades due to a devastating oil spill in 1969. The Trump administration thinks this move will make the country “energy secure” and will keep us on top in the global energy market.

2.

The Republicans are looking for “energy dominance” in the global market as well as seeking to provide jobs and have the country be “energy secure”. The Trump administration has shut down hundreds of clean energy initiatives across the country. Gavin Newsom stated he would do whatever it takes to protect the California coastline.

3.

This move to drill in the federal waters off the coast of California is a part of a 5 year plan from the Trump administration for offshore oil and gas leasing. There is no concern on their part for the environmental impact of this schedule, they are more focused on the economic power it will give the United States to be less dependent on imported oil.

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/20/trump-administration-california-florida-oil-drilling-00648189

The coast of California has not been open to drilling in decades because of the oil spill in 1969 that destroyed wildlife and contaminated waters. Republican governor Ron DeSantis in Florida have resisted Trump’s efforts to drill off the coast of Florida, on the eastern side of the Gulf of Mexico.

4. What potential biases or interests might each of your sources have?

CNN will have a slightly liberal bias because of its reputation as a left leaning media network. This could affect the information in the article by siding with California’s point of view of the damage being done to the environment rather than the economic benefit seen by the Republican side. Politico is slightly left leaning but has been rated as reliable. Alex Padilla’s website is also left leaning because his known political party is Democrat.

5. What evidence supports the claim you are fact-checking?

All the evidence supports the claim I am fact checking because these are open public plans to drill off the coast of California and have been a popular news headline.

6. What evidence undermines the claim you are fact-checking?

The only detail that could possibly undermine this claim is that the plans to drill also include the Eastern side of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s shores. There has been open resistance by the state and its leaders to this move by the Trump administration.

From what I read, this is true.  they’re talking about offering six offshore leases between 2027 and 2030 and also expanding drilling in places like the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Drilling off California hasn’t happened in forever, mostly because the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill was such a disaster that the state basically shut that idea down for good. So this new plan is kind of a huge deal.

People in California are obviously not happy about it. Gov. Gavin Newsom said the plan was “dead on arrival,” and environmental groups like the Surfrider Foundation are warning that even one bad spill could wreck beaches, wildlife, tourism, basically everything coastal communities depend on. And honestly, that makes sense, because even smaller spills have caused major problems in the past.

At the same time, it’s not totally clear how much the oil industry even wants to drill in California. The Gulf of Mexico is still way cheaper and easier for them, so some experts think companies might not actually jump at these leases even if the federal government offers them. But the whole thing really shows the tug-of-war between federal energy goals and states (especially California) trying to protect the environment and their economies.

This is true. The Trump administration is planning to allow oil and gas drilling off the California coast for the first time in decades. According to a draft plan, they’d put up six offshore lease sales between 2027 and 2030 along California’s Pacific coast. The Guardian+2ABC News+2

That’s insane considering how long coastal drilling has been avoided here. After the 1969 oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, new drilling along much of the Pacific coast was essentially scrapped. Los Angeles Times+1

When asked about the proposal while attending the climate summit in Brazil, Newsom didn’t mince words. He said the plan was “dead on arrival.” The Guardian+2Washington Examiner+2

Naturally, environmental groups and state officials are freaking out. Surfrider Foundation, along with others like National Wildlife Federation, warned that new drilling threatens coastlines, marine life, water quality, and the tourism and fishing economies that depend on a clean ocean. Surfrider Foundation+2National Wildlife Federation+2

Even local California lawmakers are pushing back hard. Leaders in the state legislature called the plan “misguided and irresponsible,” arguing that it would lock in decades of fossil-fuel dependence, jeopardize coastal economies, and ignore the lessons of past spills. sd21.senate.ca.gov+1
