The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign removed the Chief as its mascot due to racial concerns

I cannot find one concrete answer on why the Chief isn't our mascot anymore. The most information I can find has to do with racial stereotyping, but there are also mentions of abusive and hostile symbols that the Chief represented.

This is true, the main reason for discontinuation of the Chief mascot seems to be cultural appropriation. 

A statement from the University, featured in the Chicago Tribune, says, "We acknowledge that we have used imagery to promote our sports programs that is insensitive and misrepresents Native American culture and history. We once thought our use of a Chief mascot and war chants unified our campus. We were wrong. We apologize. We will discontinue the use of all appropriation of Native American culture for our entertainment purposes."

This statement highlights the university's view of the imagery used being misrepresentative and insensitive to Native American culture. The Chicago Tribune is a reputable source, and should be trustworthy. 

Another potential contributing factor for the removal of the mascot were the sanctions imposed by the NCAA.

An article from ESPN explains, "For years, American Indians and the NCAA pushed the university to do away with Chief Illiniwek...NCAA sanctions imposed in 2005 barred Illinois from hosting postseason events. Two years later, the university retired the chief."

The sanctions imposed by the NCAA added pressure to remove the Chief, as Illinois was unable to host postseason event which impacted the university's athletics.

This is true. The trustees voted to remove the Chief as the university's mascot due to people's concerns about him being a "race-based" mascot they believed needed to go. according to the article linked below, there were even protests demanding the removal. After years of holding campus-wide dialogues to understand different perspectives, until the NCAA ruled that certain Native American-based mascots were considered to be "hostile and abusive" to minorities. This resulted in the trustees vote to retire Chief Illiniwek.

There are a variety of reasons why we don't use the chief as our mascot anymore however the main one was because of racial stereotyping, misrepresentation, and offense to the university's integrity. According to CBS News "The NCAA in 2005 deemed the buckskin-clad Illiniwek an offensive use of American Indian imagery."

The NCAA banned us from hosting post season events until we did something about it. So ultimately after lots of debate for and against the 'Chief' Illinois officially retired Chief Illiniwek in 2007 after 81 years as the University of Illinois mascot.

Based on both my personal knowledge and the University of Illinois' website, Chief Illiniwek was removed for a number of reasons. One of the biggest being that the NCAA ruled that teams will be fined and penalized if they do not removed or change their mascots. Additionally, the University itself was uncomfortable with the Chief because several native tribes expressed their discomfort with the Chief. This combination of events prompted the university to remove the Chief. The Chiefs last dance was is 2007. Many students and alumni were extremely upset by this decision, but the university did not budge on it. Ultimately, the Chief was a symbol of culture appropriation and it had to go.

This is true. Chief Illiniwek was retired as the school mascot in 2007 after the NCAA called the mascot "hostile and abusive" in 2005 and decades of scrutiny. However, there are hopes of a new mascot for UIUC after years without one. In 2020 the University Senate passed a resolution for an orange and blue kingfisher to take the place of Chief Illiniwek as the school mascot. They hope for Chancellor Robert Jones to approve the new mascot. As of now, there hasn't been much of an update on wether or not the proposed kingfisher will be the replacement. This is correct. The debate concerning Chief Illiniwek continued for decades before Chief's final appearance in February 2007. In 2006, the NCAA ruled "that certain Native American-based college mascots and symbols were "hostile and abusive" to minorities." As a result, Chief Illiniwek was retired the following year, and UIUC hasn't had an official mascot since.

The reason that UIUC removed the Chief was primarily due to racial concerns. According to an article published in the Urbana High School newspaper "The Echo," the NCAA released a statement in 2005 saying that "any school with a racist or insensitive representation of American Indian culture must get rid of their offensive mascot or they will be banned from hosting NCAA post-season events." Ultimately, the Chief met the NCAA's criteria of being racially insensitive and offensive and so the University opted to remove it to remain in good standing with the NCAA and ensure sensitivity.

The Illinois newsroom also published a piece with interviews that were done with people with Native American heritage. Those people did not feel that the Chief was honoring their culture but instead, found him offensive. "This is not honoring. It's denigrating. It's demeaning. And it's an insult," Debbie Reese, tribally enrolled in the Nambé Owingeh Pueblo, said on the matter. "When students came here to Illinois...they felt that their culture was being trivialized...they did not feel welcome," Carol Spindel, a retired University of Illinois professor, said.

It is definitely true that the cause of the Chief's removal was motivated by racial concerns and that there were a large number of people who found the Chief offensive and culturally degrading.

I am saying this claim is true, but the explanation under it is not. It states, "I can not find one concrete answer on why the Chief isn't our mascot anymore." That is not true. The answer is that it was culturally insensitive, that is in fact the concrete answer you are looking for. The Chicago Tribune article goes into the impact the racially insensitive mascot has on Native American people and how they truly the only ones that are allowed to determine if the mascot should be removed or not. The liken it to students putting on blackface and doing a stereotypical routine.
