This is true depending on how you define safest form of travel. Comparing total fatalities of 10 years of data. Ferryboats have the least amount of total fatalities. However this can be misleading so consider a different way to interpret the data. Commercial planes have the lowest rate of fatalities per billion passenger hours or billion passenger miles. Private planes are much more dangerous when considering these statistics.

Private planes from 2010-2019 have 34 fatalities per billion passenger miles which is greater then cars, trucks, buses, and trains. The correct claim would be commercial flying is the safest form of travel.

Per 1 billion miles (2020): 

Cars (passenger vehicles) : 5.6 deaths

Buses: .2 deaths

Trains: .3 deaths

Statistically speaking, yes, flying is the safest way to travel due to the very low accident rate, resulting in only 0.006 deaths per billions on miles in travel. Public transportation such as trains and busses are also a safer bet than using personal automobiles which result in 6 million car accidents each year, and motorcycles which result in 212.57 deaths per one million miles in one year.

According to simple flying.com, your odds of being in an accident during a flight is one in 1.2 million, and the chances of that accident being fatal are one in 11 million. Your chances of dying in a car crash, conversely are one in 5000. While flying might be more nerve racking for some, the statistics show that its safer.

Some reasons for higher safety while flying are:

This is true. Flying is highly praised and reported to be the safest means of travel. This is largely because of all that goes into flying. There is so much technology and communication involved. Consider all of the information given by flight attendants at the beginning of flights, concerning what to do in case of an emergency. Many people do not know what to do in a car or train emergency. Also, there are many certificates, training, and experience needed to be able to operate an aircraft. Finally, there are three different departments that must be involved in a course or altitude change, which allows for mistakes to be found quickly, sometimes before they even occur.

Flying is indeed the safest form of travel! I found an article from Travel + Leisure backing up this statement. The article states, "Since you only have a 1 in 9,821 chance of dying from an air and space transport incident, flying is actually one of the safest forms of transportation." This articles discussed the safety of water transportation, public transportation, highway transportation, and railroad transportation in comparison. It also talked about why people are so scared of flying when it's indeed the safest option. Not misinformation!

Considering all of the other modes of transportation, I can say that flying is the safest mode of transportation. I found an articled titled “How Safe is Flying?” This article claimed that 19 times safer in a plane than you are in a car. Although this number seems small, it is much more common for people to drive in cars versus flying while ultimately flying is the safest way. Major airlines experienced no onboard fatalities and had a fatal accident rate of 0.0 per 100,000 flight hours in 2021. This statistic is incredible and helps provide reasoning for why it is so safe to fly.

Yes! Flying is the absolute safest form of transportation/travel

The chance of dying from an airplane is 1/9,821 while dying from highway driving is 1/114. I think a lot of people tend to have this fear of flying because plane crashes are rare, but when they happen they are all over the news. If a news channel reported every car accident it wouldn't be interesting or make for a good story since they happen so frequently.

This fear has also been constructed due to the fact that most everyone drives a car and thinks they won't get into an accident, where on a plane you aren't the one flying it and have no control over the mode of trasnporation.

This is true as flying is deemed safer then driving by a variety of sources. According to Sheffield school of aeronautics, flying is safer as there is less population of planes in the air whereas with driving, there are more cars on the road causing a higher risk of collision.
