The claim that flying is the safest form of travel is generally considered to be true. According to multiple sources, including the National Safety Council and the International Air Transport Association (IATA),

air travel has consistently been shown to have the lowest fatality rate compared to other modes of transportation such as automobiles, trains, and buses.

Statistically, the odds of being involved in a fatal airplane accident are extremely low. The IATA reported that in 2022, the global all-accident rate was 0.16 accidents per million flights. This means that the risk of being involved in an accident while flying is extremely low.

It's important to note that while air travel is generally considered the safest form of travel, no mode of transportation is completely without risk. Additionally, some people might have different opinions on what constitutes "safe" based on their own experiences or personal comfort levels. However, from a statistical standpoint, flying is the safest form of travel.
