A growing number of people are reporting they have become pregnant after using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic despite previous infertility or being on birth control pills.

This claim that Ozempic increases your chances of getting pregnant is not completely wrong, but is also not completely right. After reading an article by The Fertility Institute of San Diego, it has been found that Ozempic has helped women get to a better health state to become pregnant, but is not considered a fertility drug. Ozempic does help women with weight loss and the regulation of hormones which are two things that have been found to benefit the chances of pregnancy. I would consider this claim to be true as it may help other health factors that help increase pregnancy.

source: https://www.advancedfertility.com/blog/ozempic-babies Great Fact check. According to our sources, it has been known for years that weight loss may improve fertility by allowing women to ovulate. Therefore, the most likely explanation for these sudden/surprise pregnancies is that the significant weight loss from the drugs can restore ovulation. Another explanation is weight loss medication may interfere with the absorption and effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Ozempic itself does not make you more fertile with what the medication has in it, but it lessens the strength of birth control medication. While the claim is partially true, it doesn't fully expand on why more women are becoming pregnant after the use of Ozempic. GLP-1 receptors slow down the rate of food moving throughout the body causing people to lose weight, but it also affects birth control and how it is absorbed throughout the body. Losing weight overall increases the chances of getting pregnant.

Great fact-check, however, there is a point of minutiae in your answer that I think deserves addressing. Decreasing your BMI to a healthy level is what increases the chances of becoming pregnant, not necessarily losing weight. There is a difference between weight loss and bringing one's BMI down, as weight can be lost in a number of different forms, some healthier than others. For example, one could lose 10 pounds of fat and be much better off than someone who lost 15 pounds of water weight and has become severely dehydrated. Losing 15 pounds of fat would have a very different effect on fertility compared to losing that much water, so it is important to clarify that technicality for the sake of accuracy.

This claim is slightly true. While there are cases of people having increased fertility after being on Ozempic, it has less to do with the drug itself and more with how the body carries out daily functions after the drug's weight loss and insulin effects. According to Karen Wheeler, MD, FACOG, "weight loss can increase the rate of ovulation in women with irregular periods." GLP-1 drugs can also negatively impact how well birth control pills work in a person's body. However, there is not enough research to show if there's a connection between GLP-1 drugs and fertility, or how these drugs affect pregnancy, so doctors do not recommend using these medications as fertility treatments.

Looking through the article on the healthline site where the claim is stated-- there are noticable things to point out about the details/reasoning behind the claim. The article references that the claim is confirmed by Dr. Neha Lalani, who speicalizes in endocrinology and diabetes, which examines fertility with contraceptions.

While GLP-1 like ozempic does not directly causes fertility, it is a variable that assists in fertility for individuals. This is done because absorption of medications such as birth control are absorbed differently once someone is in use of ozempic. That connection may be the factor of higher pregnancy rates.

So while it is true that it plays a significant part to lead to the increase, it is not solely the reason why it increases. reference: https://www.healthline.com/health-news/ozempic-babies-unplanned-pregnancies#How-GLP-1-drugs-like-Ozempic-can-interfere-with-oral-birth-control

This claim is true. According to Web MD, a reliable and verified source, Ozempic, a GLP1 medicine increases fertility. One way this happens is because Ozempic is a weight loss drug, and weight loss leads to a better chance of getting pregnant. GLP1 medications also reduce your insulin levels, which increases fertility. Although it has been shown to increase fertility, it is not a drug approved to increase fertitlity and is only intended to be a weight loss drug. The Fertility Institute of San Diego verifies this information, writing that “Originally indicated for type 2 diabetes management and weight loss, an intriguing pattern has surfaced: an uptick in pregnancies among users. “

While taking Ozempic does not directly increase one's chances of getting pregnant, because it is not a fertility medication, the effects of taking Ozempic do have an indirect impact on fertility. You posted an article from Healthline, which has been posting peer-reviewed health-related articles since 1999. According to them, taking Ozempic can increase the chances of fertility through better hormone regulation from weight loss, and slowed metabolization of birth control drugs. This is backed up by an article from the Fertility Institute of San Diego, which says the weight loss caused by Ozempic, through a reduction in appetite and calorie intake, can help rebalance hormone levels, increasing the chances of conception (Ozempic, Fertility Institute of San Diego). Therefore, while Ozempic's effects of weight loss can lead to better hormone regulation, which in turn increases the chances of pregnancy, there is no direct correlation between taking Ozempic and having a higher chance of pregnancy. This is further reinforced by an article from the Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit medical care and research center, which states that "'We know that each BMI point above 29 decreases female fertility by about 5%. That’s pretty significant,' Dr. McIntosh reports. 'So, when you take medications like Ozempic that aid in weight loss, it can boost fertility.'" (Connection Between, Cleveland Clinic).

Health Line News claims that Ozempic, a prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes and often being used for weight loss, is causing women to become more fertile. This post gives examples of individuals who claim Ozempic got them pregnant while on birth control, and improved recent infertility. This post could be somewhat misleading, as there is no direct evidence that Ozempic in itself, causes higher fertility (https://www.healthline.com/health-news/ozempic-babies-unplanned-pregnancies).

The National Library of Medicine provides evidence of an experiment conducted on the relationship between obesity and fertility. As of now, only fertility specific experiments with the drug have been conducted on rats, therefor to assume the same results for a human being would not be accurate. There is a correlation between overall health and fertility, and Ozempic is not recommended to be taken if you are planning to become pregnant (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10328448/).

All in all the impact of Ozempic on fertility and reproductive health has very limited research and should not be used to promote pregnancy. The Health Line article states all of this information, including the reason why Ozempic might correlate with increased pregnancy, as well as the health risks involved.

It seems, however, that there are not enough thoroughly conducted experiments that can claim Ozempic boosts fertility or interfere with birth control. This claim has been made by the few cases in which individuals have stated what happened to them. This does not count as scientific evidence.

The claim that ozempic increases your chances of getting pregnant is not entirely true but it is not false either. After reading an article provided by Cleveland Clinic, a reliable source and medical clinic known for medical breakthroughs and top of the line heart care found research on a connection between ozempic and pregnancy. The source supports the claim that it does increase rates of pregnancy but not at all directly. It does this by saying, "But Ozempic and other GLP-1s work by slowing down absorption. That means your hormonal birth control pill may not be absorbed as well - leaving you vulnerable to an unintended pregnancy" (Pregnancy & Childbirth, 2025). The research found that ozempic can disrupt your absorption which could lead to birth control users not experiencing the full effects. The main claim, though, is that ozempic is a weight loss pill and any weight loss can lead to an increase in fertility. It is not the ozempic that is making pregnancies more frequent, but losing weight is. People can lose weight without ozempic, so the claim is not completely true nor is it false. A source from "The Bump", a pregnancy facility and institution, supports that weight loss is the prime cause of an increased rate of fertility. Dr. Karen Wheeler found that, "We know that weight loss can increase the rate of ovulation in women with irregular periods," (Ozempic Babies, 2024). She makes the connection of increased rate of ovulation and weight loss but does not specify that it has to be from ozempic. Evidence from a top of the line medical clinic and doctor specializing in pregnancies makes this reliable and somewhat justifies the claim but does not prove it to be true all the way.

The claim that Ozempic increases your chances of getting pregnant is partially accurate but not because the drug directly enhances fertility. Instead, Ozempic may indirectly improve fertility due to its effects on weight loss and overall health.

Significant weight loss due to Ozempic can lead to:

In individuals with obesity-related ovulatory dysfunction or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, weight loss can resume regular ovulation cycles, increasing the likelihood of becoming pregnant.

Weight loss can also reduce insulin resistance and lower estrogen levels produced by excess fat tissue, both can have positive affects on reproductive hormones

Ozempic can better health systems related to weight loss but it isn't directly used to induce pregnancy. Better health, seen as an aspect of the use of Ozempic, will make it easier for women to conceive.
