This claim was posted originally on the platform X by an account titled, "Whale Insider". After diving deeper into the account, it seems to be a media news outlet for all things cryptocurrency and technology current events. While they are verified on the platform and have lots of followers, I am still skeptical of the legitimacy of their claim. On the internet, I was unable to find a reliable source reporting on the conversion of Bitcoin to physical gold, but that could be due to the fact that it is a simple headline that may not be describes as newsworthy to many media outlets. Instead, I found another tweet from Whale Insider where they reported that President Trump plans to talk to Vladamir Putin on the phone on Monday. After looking into this claim, CNN is reporting the same news, which helps Whale Insider's reliability of being a trusted news source. While this claim seems very objective with little room for gray area, I do not have the knowledge or ability to test it, therefore do not know if it is truly a true or false claim. After reviewing other sources, looking into the Whale Insider's social media presence background and analyzing their posting pattern of information, I am inclined to say it is a true claim, yet can not be 100% certain.

According to the stock market, the claim that the WhaleInsider made on May 17th that one Bitcoin was worth the same as 1kg of gold is true. Throughout the day of May 17th, the price varied around $103,000 which was the same as 1kg of gold at the time according to APMEX, which is a reliable metal exchange company. The worth of a product always fluctuates which we see when comparing the prices of both bitcoin and gold on the 17th to today. According to the same sources, today one bitcoin is currently worth $107,477.20 USD while 1kg of gold is worth $107,036.11 USD. This shows that although the prices have changed, they are still congruent in their increases. This continues to support the claim even while the prices themselves have changed. The individual who posted this claim is classified as a novice on the platform, although they provide analysis themselves to backup the claim. They could have used more credible sources since they decided to use both X, which is a platform where anyone can post anything, as well as msn which is news source that has some reliability but is not the most reliable when compared to others. According to adfontesmedia.com, the reliability of msn is 25.62 on a scale of 0-64. Despite these sources, the claim itself holds up when fact checks through other more reliable sources.

Great fact check! This clarified the original claim for me, by also adding how the two prices change throughout the days. Overall the two different sources for the exchange rates was well done and was informational.

You did a great job comparing the data from May 17 with current values and using a reliable source like APMEX for the gold price. One thing I’d push a little further is the framing of the claim saying 1 Bitcoin “is worth the same” as 1kg of gold sounds very absolute, but the values only matched briefly that day, right? Because both assets fluctuate frequently, it might be more accurate to say that their values aligned temporarily on May 17 rather than claiming outright equivalence. I also appreciate that you noted the weakness of the original poster’s sources, but I think it would strengthen your check even more if you included a screenshot or quote directly from the original post to show exactly how the claim was worded. That way, it’s easier to evaluate whether they were making a precise comparison or just using a catchy statement. Still, great use of reliable data to verify the substance of the claim

Great addition to include the reliability score for the source provided by the original claim, adds to a very constructive critique of their claim Also, your overall factcheck was very succinct and clearly explained the nuance of price fluctuations. Good job!

The claim is true although the result is ever changing. Currently one bitcoin is worth $105,249.20 and one kilogram of gold as of May 18, 2025 is worth $103,863. Therefor the claim that on May 17th, 2025 one bitcoin was worth one kilogram of gold is most likely true. The value of bitcoin and gold are ever changing and based on various economic factors so this may not remain true for long. With this evidence it is easy to believe that "Whale Insider" is a reliable source as claimed above. That being said it is important to not just really on one source for your information and do your own research.

This is a very solid answer. I like that you included the exact numbers that were being questioned and researched the source. It is also important that you use different sources from the original claim. All around, a good answer.

Great job highlighting the fluctuating values of Bitcoin and gold, this context really helps clarify why the claim is time-sensitive. I also appreciate your reminder about not relying on a single source; that’s crucial with fast-changing markets like crypto and precious metals. One thing that might strengthen your argument even more is diving a bit deeper into how credible Whale Insider is beyond just their tweet patterns, like checking if they have any history of accurate financial reporting or if other trusted finance outlets reference them. Overall, your use of up-to-date pricing data really makes the claim believable. Thanks for the clear, balanced explanation!

Good fact check, especially with just verifying the worth of the gold and the bitcoin, it was straightforward and got to the point. Also nice job bringing up the point that values of these kind of things can change. Maybe you could have expanded on the credibility of whale insider.

This is a very acceptable answer to the claim, as the structure of Bitcoin does allow for it to be ever changing. I also like how you pointed out that you cannot rely upon one source to conduct research around specific topics, citing the need for finding credibility within these claims.

Very nice fact check here. I appreciate your attention to detail when talking about the relevancy of multiple sources. When fact checking anything, it is important to have multiple sources to create ultimate credibility. I also appreciate your emphasis on the fluctuating market, which I talked about in my response as well. Nice work!

This claim is true.

Currently (May 19th 2025) the worth of one bitcoin is $105,310.60. The worth of one kilogram of gold is $103,901.57.  Both of these prices are in USD. We do have to keep in mind that these prices can change at any minute due to many factors, but yes currently one bitcoin is worth one kilogram of gold.

I like how straight to the point you were about the true prices of both items, and also the fact that the prices change frequently. Both Sources you used are what looks to be stock market websites tracking the rise and fall of both of these items as well. The sources are good, although, I would've liked to see, in terms of bitcoin, a source directly from their website possibly? Other than that, great response.

Thank you for a strong reply as you made sure to clarify the exact amount of value for both gold and bitcoin. The claim is mostly true as they are not exactly even but close enough to make sense for the claim. I liked how mentioned that these prices are constantly changing due to economic factors and other movements.

I like the sources you used, since they are both very reliable. I also like how you included that they are both in USD, which helps makes it more clear that they are similar prices. Your fact check was also very concise which is good for someone who wants a quick answer to their question.

Thank you for providing such a clear and well-supported response. I appreciate how you included the precise valuations of both Bitcoin and gold, which adds credibility and context to the comparison. While the claim is mostly accurate—since the two assets are not exactly equal in value—the proximity of their worth makes the statement reasonable. I also found it insightful that you acknowledged the dynamic nature of these prices, emphasizing how economic trends and market forces continually influence their valuation.

The claim being discussed is semi-true. According to Elements, the current price of bitcoin sits at a worth of $105,249.20 and as of May 18, 2025 the current price of one kilogram of gold is worth $103,863. Based on this information, it can be said that the claim that 1 bitcoin is worth one kilogram of gold is mostly true. Just as the stock market fluctuates, so does bitcoin and the price of gold so this equivilency and price point can fluctuate as well. We must keep this in mind when determining the correlation between gold and bitcoin prices. Nonetheless, at the time given by the prompt, one kilogram of gold is currently worth 1 bitcoin making this claim true.

I agree that it is important to recognize that both prices fluctuate but I did find it interesting that they are fluctuating similarly. This goes beyond the original claim that they are worth the same on a particular day, and that maybe they will continue to be worth similarly despite the changes in their values.

As of May 21, 2025, at 10:24 am per Coinbase, 1 Bitcoin is worth $108,146. This value changes every moment and is one of the most volatile equity forms there are now. But the claim that the price is the same as one kilogram of gold holds per BullionByPost, they currently have gold valued at $106,593. Both of these fluctuate very often, and the claim made by Rocco is verifiable and a fact.

The claim that 1 Bitcoin is worth 1 kilogram of gold as of May 17, 2025, is fairly accurate, based on verified financial data. To check the validity of this claim I found reliable sources that track cryptocurrency prices and other item prices in real time. According to Ycharts, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $103,556 on that date. Meanwhile, PriceGold.net listed the price of gold at roughly $102,992 per kilogram. These numbers show that Bitcoin’s value slightly surpassed that of a kilogram of gold on May 17, making the claim reasonably true. However, to double check the accuracy, I compared these numbers with other sources to avoid getting one-sided information on a single possibly inaccurate reference, and ultimately ended up with very similar numbers.

The claim that one Bitcoin was worth the equivalent of one kilogram of gold as of May 17, 2025, is largely accurate based on verified financial data. To assess the validity of this statement, I consulted multiple reliable sources that provide real-time pricing for both cryptocurrencies and commodities. According to YCharts, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $103,556 on that date, while PriceGold.net listed the value of a kilogram of gold at around $102,992. These figures indicate that Bitcoin’s value slightly exceeded that of a kilogram of gold, lending credibility to the claim. To ensure the accuracy of these numbers, I cross-referenced them with additional sources to avoid relying on a single, potentially inaccurate dataset. The consistency across platforms confirmed that the comparison was reasonable and supported by empirical evidence.

The current price of one Bitcoin stands at approximately $108,912.54, while a kilogram of gold is valued at around $106,086.22. This demonstrates that Bitcoin surpasses gold in value by over $2,800. This significant disparity emphasizes the undeniable rise of digital currencies in the financial markets. Once dismissed as a volatile and speculative asset, Bitcoin has firmly established itself as a major investment, with robust adoption from insional and retail investors.

The post by "Whale Insider" claiming that 1 Bitcoin is worth 1kg of Gold was true at the time of its posting. The difference is value between them has grown slightly but still remains very close as of right now. At the time of its posting, there was a difference of $26 between the two. Since May 17th, when this tweet was posted, the price of each has risen slightly. As of May 28th at 2:37, Bitcoin is valued at $107, 547.36. 1kg of Gold is valued at $105,654.59. Their value is extremely close now and was the same at the time the claim was posted on X. The post by "Whale Insider" was true.
