I'd recommend against using TikTok as a primary source because it is a prime media platform for mis/dis information as well as deep fakes and conspiracies. Upon further research, this claim is false.

There isn't much to say about the validity of this video. As it is just someone reacting to the content that Shein might be shutting down. However, I highly don't recommend anyone get their information from a place like Tik Tok and rather, go to the primary source and make your own conclusions.

Based on my research, I wasn’t able to find anywhere where Shein itself or another credible source validated this claim. Also this was posted on TikTok where there is a lot of mis/dis information. I also found an article explaining how Shein actually plans to take it to another step and go public in 2024.

This video appears to be extremely vague and presents a personal claim. It could even be interpreted as a joke. I agree with the other comments; TikTok should not be relied on as a primary source, as much of the information presented is not checked and often false. If such a claim were true, it would likely spark a huge online uproar and be covered by mainstream sources. However, while searching for other sources, I found no major organizations reporting on this. The search showed few results related to this claim. The sources I did find state that Shein will not be closing in 2024, and there has been no official confirmation from the company.

Absolutely, relying on TikTok as a primary source can lead to misinformation. It's crucial to verify claims from reputable sources before accepting them as true.

I think this is very well said. Tik tok is not a reliable source and I see all sorts of misinformation posted everyday and people believe it.
by Apprentice (1.2k points)
This is false. Using other media sources or outlets in the future can help better your knowledge on ideas like these. Tiktok and mostly all forms of social media are deceitful and clickbaity.

This claim is false. TikTok is one source you shouldn't go to in order to find out viable information. Before concluding a claim such as this, Google would be a good source to look at first.

you make a great point but if you had points to back it up that would be even better

Tik Tok should never be used as a source for accurate information. I researched if Shein was shutting down and found this link that claims there is no confirmation of Shein shutting down.

The claim that the online store, Shein, is shutting down this year is false. The original source is a TikTok that provides no evidence to credit this statement. TikTok oftentimes isn't a reliable primary source due to the lack of evidence. This TikTok is even more suspicious due to the limited commenting settings on the post. After searching this claim on other platforms there is no evidence that the company is shutting down. Even though the company is highly controversial due to speculations on the working conditions and lack of sustainability, there has been no statement from Shein about shutting down or giving away credits. In fact, according to an article from Forbes, Shein will go public in the year 2024 which directly contradicts the TikTok's claim.

As a general rule, social media should not be considered a reliable source. This TikTok user doesn't include any sources, but a google search shows that the video is misinformation. Shein is not shutting down, or at least has not released a statement saying one way or another. Urban Matter and Freshers Live agree that Shein is not shutting down. Unfortunately these are not well known sources (such as NY Times, Washington Post, etc.), but this is not necessarily a topic that warrants that level of coverage-- this is the only information available. It's unclear exactly where this rumor stemmed from, but it's relevant to note that Shein faced multiple lawsuits in July 2023 for copyright infringement. The company has also received backlash for poor labor condition and unethical environmental practices, which stirred up conversation on the plausible longevity of the company. This video is misinformed rumor with no substantial supporting information.

After doing research, there seems to not be enough information on the matter to claim if it is true. Here are some articles I found that mentioned the rumor. I'd recommend branching out away from Tik Tok as this video is very vague and lacking information.

There appears to be no credible or conclusive evidence about this claim. Shein has not released a statement claiming that they will be shutting down in 2024 or even in any other year at the current moment. The only claims stating this appear to be TikToks and other unreliable sources with no data backing them. Claims made in TikToks without evidence provided cannot be trusted to be true. When looking online further, there are still no sources explaining this claim. According to UrbanMatter, one of the few sources covering this claim, "Shein is preparing for a significant event—an Initial Public Offering (IPO) slated for 2024," but is not planning to liquidate. This preparation could indicate "a company’s good health and faith in its future," but once again, this source also does not appear to be reliable or have any information on the claim.

I haven't heard of Urban Matter before. Is this a reliable source? How do you know? Are there any other sources you could cross-reference with this to prove the validity of this answer?

The claim that Shein is shutting down has not been proven by any online claims or by the company itself. While Shein has undergone many controversies and been in the light frequently for matters pertaining to its working conditions and quality, the company has not spoken out about anything revolving the company shutting down. The post from the original fact check could be a satirical post as well, since Shein is a widely talked about brand on TikTok.

Based off of the given information, there has been no comment from Shein itself addressing its closing. This Tik Tok is spreading misinformation and is merely a rumor. Forbes came out with an article in December of 2023 stating that Shein would be going public in 2024, leaving many to believe that Sheins business is still booming.

While Shein has faced numerous accounts of backlash and controversies, there is no reported information or confirmation that the brand is shutting down (Urban Matter). There has been speculation of a potential shutdown after issues such as forced labor, ethical concerns, data privacy and surveillance, and exploiting imports and exports were reported. However, with this information being reported, there is no confirmation of Shein shutting down in 2024.

My research reflects that this is a false claim. This claim was presented, then circulated across Tiktok by a variety of users, but has not been reported on by any major news sources, or back by Shein themselves. The only official statement from the Shein corporation has published is regarding their intent to take their company public in 2024, thus reflecting they are nowhere near shutting down their company. A notable, but unofficial, nod towards these claims comes from the Shein us sector Tikktok, where workers posted themselves laughing to a laugh track with the caption "Shein is closing in 2024".  This post, couples with a response to users with statements saying "Not true at all!". and "The rumors were not true!" further suggests that the company is nowhere near shutting down.
