I'd recommend against using TikTok as a primary source because it is a prime media platform for mis/dis information as well as deep fakes and conspiracies. Upon further research, this claim is false.

There isn't much to say about the validity of this video. As it is just someone reacting to the content that Shein might be shutting down. However, I highly don't recommend anyone get their information from a place like Tik Tok and rather, go to the primary source and make your own conclusions.

Based on my research, I wasn’t able to find anywhere where Shein itself or another credible source validated this claim. Also this was posted on TikTok where there is a lot of mis/dis information. I also found an article explaining how Shein actually plans to take it to another step and go public in 2024.

This video appears to be extremely vague and presents a personal claim. It could even be interpreted as a joke. I agree with the other comments; TikTok should not be relied on as a primary source, as much of the information presented is not checked and often false. If such a claim were true, it would likely spark a huge online uproar and be covered by mainstream sources. However, while searching for other sources, I found no major organizations reporting on this. The search showed few results related to this claim. The sources I did find state that Shein will not be closing in 2024, and there has been no official confirmation from the company.

Absolutely, relying on TikTok as a primary source can lead to misinformation. It's crucial to verify claims from reputable sources before accepting them as true.

I think this is very well said. Tik tok is not a reliable source and I see all sorts of misinformation posted everyday and people believe it.
by Apprentice (1.2k points)
This is false. Using other media sources or outlets in the future can help better your knowledge on ideas like these. Tiktok and mostly all forms of social media are deceitful and clickbaity.
by Newbie (370 points)
This claim is false. TikTok is one source you shouldn't go to in order to find out viable information. Before concluding a claim such as this, Google would be a good source to look at first.

you make a great point but if you had points to back it up that would be even better

There is no source listed in the video, which is a common way that false claims spread online. There are no articles I could find that suggest that Shien is shutting down, with the closest article to the claim being reports that the company is going public in 2024. It is possible that this move was misinterpreted, prompting videos such as the one linked in the claim.

I used the same sources you used in this fact check in mine and got the same result that this claim was false. I appreciate the to-the-point approach you took with this check.

The claim that Shein, the fashion store, is shutting down has no basis or substantial evidence. According to Urban Matter, a website dedicated to delivering news about trends, despite the controversies Shein has found itself in, the major business will continue to run in 2024. The tiktok user, olivajacky, also seems to be running a scam link in her bio, using bots or friends to clearly entice other users to potentially click the link in her bio. It's very possible for these users to make claims that go viral in order for them to push their scams further. Instagram states to be weary of links but has always had issues with users promoting or falling for scams.

Based on my research, it seems like there has been no statement made so far about whether Shein is shutting down or staying in business. However, looking at the title of the Forbes article, "Shein, Global Fashion Manufacturer, Will Go Public In 2024" it seems easy to interpret that this claim may be false.

The following claim should be considered as a rumor. Shein has not responded to this rumor but they are still a function company at the moment.

All sources say that this claim is not confirmed and there is no credible statements that prove that this TikTok claim is true. Although TikTok is a place where many come and share information, it is not a credible place to rely on information.

Typically, it doesn't serve well to trust TikTok videos as a reliable source of news. This video and this creator are not a reliable source. There are not a ton of articles about this claim, due to the fact that it is just a rumor. There is no information on the internet to back up this claim. I found two sources, one that says the rumors are not true. The other source, which is reliable, Forbes says Shein is going public in 2024. It doesn't mention the rumors, but if they are going public, they are not shutting down. This claim is false.

There is no current evidence that SHEIN is shutting down in 2024 (Naveenkumar 2024). The claim has no source baking itself up, the only piece of evidence claiming SHEIN is shutting down is the TikTok OP showcased which had no further evidence attached to it. Given TikTok is full of misinformation (Wong 2022) this video is not enough to prove SHEIN is closing for good.

Based on my research, I believe it is safe to say that this is misinformation. First of all, a source such as TIK TOK is not valid for getting news. Also, this is not even an informative news video but rather a "reaction" of sorts to a claim that somebody made. There is nothing in the video to back this up nor did I find anything elsewhere that made this claim valid or proved what was being said. Therefore, according to my research SHEIN is not being shut down. Actually, on the contrary, according to Forbes, SHEIN is looking to grow and become more public in the upcoming years. My research also concluded that SHEIN does very well and is not looking at any money loss. In fact, they are consistently making money and profit. TIK TOK is not a valid source for such claims and they definitely require more research to solidify them or prove them to be false, which in this case it is false.

It's important to firstly note that TikTok is not necessarily a reliable source by any means. The creator of the video, Olivia Jacky, has no credibility seen whatsoever, and the video does not seem to be visible from her profile. With that being said, I still went through some research, and found that according to Urban Matter (among other sites), the company is not closing. These websites are not the most backed with evidence, only furthering the point that this is simply a rumor made from the agent. The claim is misleading, however, because changes are still happening to the company in general. A source in Forbes magazine says that rather than shutting down, the company will be going public in an IPO this year.

In summary, there is insufficient evidence to be able to confirm or deny this claim. There are few links, or Shein themselves, who are working on this rumor. We do know, however, that the company will be remaining active currently and possibly going public with the IPO in 2024.

It appears that the claim can be considered false. Researching the topic, I couldn’t find any source that also mentioned Shein closing in 2024, other than references to the Tiktok website and a Reddit forum. There was one website, fresherslive.com, that mentioned the possibility, only citing the company’s struggles facing legal challenges and controversies. However, the website concluded that there is no confirmation that Shein will be closing down in 2024. All of the other sources even mentioning the claim only reference Tiktok as the source. Tiktok is not a credible source for legitimizing any claim, unless the user posting content has externally verifiable credentials. The user that posted this video, Oliviajacky, has no apparent credentials or expertise relevant to the claim, and did not offer any additional information or context to justify their claim. Due to the lack of evidence and the source’s lack of credibility, this claim can be assumed to be false.
